Dominique Strauss-Kahn jeszcze nie zrezygnował, ale giełda kandydatów na jego miejsce już ruszyła. Nawet pobieżne spojrzenie na listę potencjalnych nazwisk pokazuje, jak radykalnie zmieniła się sytuacja od czasów, gdy wybierano DSK.
Francuz zawiesił poprzeczkę swoim następcom bardzo wysoko. W czasie kryzysu pokazał profil Funduszu, który nie był wcześniej znany. Tak, stabilizował pieniędzmi, ale przede wszystkim uspokajał rynki i państwa, które przez deprecjację waluty chciały za wszelką cenę utrzymać wysoką, rodzimą produkcję.
Aktualny wybór już ma charakter globalny, a Europa utraciła historyczny przywilej objęcia stanowiska szefa MFW. Komentatorzy mówią o tureckim ministrze finansów, Chińczycy co prawda nie zgłoszą kandydata, ale jako trzeci co do wielkości płatnik żądać będą "pełnej przejrzystości" przy obsadzie stanowiska. Europejczycy, rzecz jasna, bardzo by chcieli mieć swojego. Ich głównym argumentem jest to, że najwięcej kłopotów przynoszą państwa… europejskie. Dla reszty świata jest to jednak argument dość słaby… Mógłby być więc Gordon Brown, ale to laburzysta. Mogłaby być francuska minister finansów Christine Lagarde, która mówi po angielsku (?!), świetnie radzi sobie z kryzysem, ale ciągnie się za nią śledztwo z 2007 roku, itd., itd...
Na tym tle kandydatura Marka Belki żyje, ale tyle w Polsce. On sam zna realnie swoje szanse i nie dał się uwieść domorosłym ambicjonerom. Milczy. A tak bardzo chcielibyśmy pokazać światu, że Polak potrafi…

The heat
Dominique Strauss-Kahn hasn’t resigned yet, but the market for his replacement is already open. Even a quick look on the list of the potential names shows how radically the situation had changed ever since DSK was elected.
The Frenchman set a very high standard. During the crisis, he was able to improve the Fund’s image by showing a profile that was unknown before. Yes, he stabilized with money, but most importantly he managed to calm down markets and countries who, because of the decreasing values, wanted to maintain the home production at all costs.
The current election is definitely global, and Europe lost its chance to fulfill the position in IMF. The commentators mention the Turkish secretary of finance, Chinese will not offer a candidate, but are saying they want "full awareness" of who might take it, because of their global input. Europeans, obviously, would very much like to have their own candidate. Their main argument is that… it’s the European countries that cause the most trouble. For the rest of the world, however, it’s kind of a weak reason. There could be a chance for Gordon Brown, but he’s a labourist. It could also be the French minister of finance, Christine Lagarde, who even speaks English (?!), handles the crisis very well, but she’s also a subject of an active investigation since 2007, and so on…
In such environment, Marek Belka's (Head of National Bank of Poland) candidature is still alive, but that’s it in Poland. He’s very realistic about his actual chances and refuses to be seduced by over-achievers. He’s silent. We all would love to show it to the world that, yes - we can…
